“He is very beautiful,:” Syed said staring at Caleb, the Betta fish. “You like him very much?”
“Yes,” Amir said.
“Because the fish is a gift from Prince, is it not?”
Syed sighed, turned and walked away to the middle of the room where he stopped and the roof of the Christian church on the hill behind the trees was lit up by the sun that had started to set.
“Syed, what is wrong?” Amir said from behind and reached out and stroked Syed’s shoulder.
“I can’t go through with it, Amir,” Syed said closing his eyes.
“What are you talking about?”
“The wedding. The whole arrangement is a farce I cannot let it happen.”
"Syed, does this have anything to do with what happened the other night.”
Syed turned around and gazed into Amir’s kind eyes. “Yes,” he said.
“And now you’ve decided not to marry Aphrodite because of that?”
“Yes,” Syed said reaching for Amir’s hand that he squeezed gently, and there were tears in his eyes because he felt comforted by his closest friend. “I will lose my inheritance if I do not marry Aphrodite. What must I do to be not this unhappy, Amir, and live a lie of a woman I do not love?"
Syed came home early from the university and told Amir, his closest friend since childhood and one of two housemates he had something important to tell him. Amir was always happy and told Syed it could not be as important as what Prince had brought home after work. Prince, Syed thought angrily to himself, it was always something about Prince, the third roommate. That’s all Amir talked about lately was Prince this and Prince that. Amir smiled and took Syed by the hand and led him into the living room. In the corner was a new aquarium shaped like an octagon and in the water, a bright red fish swam up to the glass and flared up at the sight of Syed.
“Meet Caleb,” Amir said. “Our new Betta fighting fish. A gift from Prince.”
