Investment in a dying downtown turned Peekskill's historic and abandoned buildings into lofts for artists, which revived Peekskill into a lively place and a canvas for local and international artists. The 20th annual Open Studio took place June 3 and 4.
For Open Studio most of the studios are within a six-block area of downtown. Sites farther afield use a free shuttle bus that make stops at key locations, including the Metro-North station, the Jan Peek Gazebo, the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art and the Hat Factory, a mixed-use center where more studios and exhibitions are open. With tons of artist studios and art galleries has come eclectic new restaurants, bars and shops, making downtown Peekskill a destination. Getting to Peekskill from New York City's Grand Central Terminal is pretty easy via Metro-Rail North. From New York, Peekskill via Metro-Rail North is about an hour and five minutes.
