EDGE OF NIGHT, 25 Mar 1969
U.S. Senator Benjamin "Ben" Travis
Downtown Monticello Office . . .
To ease Ben Travis’ volatile concerns, Eric Barrington assures the anxious senator that Mona and Barney West are taking good care of Laurie Karr up in Graham county, and she's under control. Not so assured that the sneaky, impoverished Wests are capable of taking good care of anything, Travis reminds Barrington ominously that the couple may have to do more than just watch Laurie to prove their worth and be forgiven of their large debt. “Mike Karr’s only begotten daughter, Laurie Karr, will have to die,” Ben concludes.

Ben Travis’s beautiful spoiled, rich and divorced daughter, Nicole, daydreams about Mike Karr and his relationship with a devoted wife like Nancy. Nicole wonders why she's even attracted to Mike Karr in the first place and a boring town like Monticello that isn’t exactly a worldly Nicole's cup of tea. She figures she must be out of her mind to even contemplate making Monticello home and not more sophisticated Paris or New York where she is more alive. Forget New York. Duane Stuart, her ex-husband, is there with his new wife, older, domineering and unattractive Pamela who charmed Daune away from Nicole with more Franklins than Nicole was willing to furnish dimwitted Daune. Nicole wants no part of them ever again. Then she smiles, considering how delightful it will be to compete against a worthier opponent like Nancy Karr and take Mike away from Nancy. Surely she’ll be the talk of boring Monticello and Mike Karr would be hers with or without the town’s approval.
MAEVE McGUIRE starred as glamerous bad-girl Nicole Travis infatuated with Nancy's husband, Mike Karr. The character of Nicole Travis along with Adam Drake (Donald May) and Keith Whitney/Jonah Lockwood (Bruce Martin) were among Henry Slesar's greatest "Edge of Night" creations that skyrocketted "Edge's" ratings through the roof like never before and never again after the "actors" departures...
Ben Travis arrives back at their St. Anthony Hotel suite and has a heart-to-heart talk with Nicole about Mike.
“A man with Mike's abilities is only hindered by a woman like Nancy,” Travis encourages his daughter. “Furthermore, you should go after Mike, if you really want him. Your lifelong ambition, Nicole, is to love and be loved.”
Nicole is startled by her father’s sudden change in attitude. Yes, she decides sipping another glass of sherry with Ben, Nicole will gladly destroy the Karr’s stable marriage and take Mike away from Nancy.
Barrington's Loan Sharks Headquarters Monticello
When Ron tells Barrington that Ron and Cookie are planning to be married on April 11th, Barrington informs Ron that Ron's honeymoon will be a one-day affair, since there's plenty of work to be done with Mike Karr. Aware of Ron's curious gaze, Barrington confesses that Laurie Karr has been kidnaped and will not be returned to Mike and Nancy Karr until all the loan shark doctors are out of the country. Ron is stunned. Barrington further states that Ron will watch Karr's every move. Whenever Mike Karr sleeps, eats, makes love to his wife, Barrington insists that Ron will now on monitor Mike Karr at all hours.
Suddenly, Ron feels an impending doom and fear lights up his steely blue eyes. “What if I-I refuse...this.. spying on Mike a-any longer?" Ron stammers.
“Then I will be forced to inform the chief of police and the public that you, Mr. Christopher, and you alone were responsible for Philip Capice's near-fatal beating. Do you think Cookie Thomas will think of marrying you after that?”
