The Coach House, Monticello riverfront
“We went to a restaurant called The Copper Kettle,” Cookie is telling her handsome fiancé Ron Christopher about her impromptu luncheon with Martha Marceau over dinner Ron and Cookie are having at the Coach House. “It sounded very a atmospheric, and it was.”
Ron rolls his eyes at the thought, “The dominate atmosphere was surliness. I’m sure that’s what you meant.”
“I supposed if you say so,” Cookie puts down her glass of white wine. "Yes, it really was...haughty."
“Are we done?”
“Yes, of course, darling.”
“I’ll get the check...Waiter,” Ron says, raising a hand for a waiter nearby. “I want to stop by Mike and Nancy’s on the way home or...before I drive you home.”
“Great,” Cookie says cheerfully. “I’ll accompany you to my sister and brother-in-law’s with fine honor. Then you can drive me home...back to my lonely apartment.”
"Is that all you have in mind back at your lonely apartment, my sweet?"
"No, we'll have a nightcap," Cookie smiles and slips her hand underneath Ron's on top of the white cloth covered table.
Ron caresses Cookie's hand and grins back as the waiter walks up.
The Karr ranch-style house, suburban Monticello
Up in Graham County near Raintree
At the cabin, Barney West shows wife Mona the handgun Barrington gave him and tells Mona exactly what Barrington expects Barney to do with it. While Laurie Karr pretends to sleep, Mona and Barney argue about keeping the gun in the shack. More than anything else in the world Mona hates guns, doesn’t want to be around a gun and wishes Barney will just say “no thanks” and return the gun to Barrington. Terrible guns that they are give Mona the jitters. Finally to satisfy Mona and stop arguing, a tired Barney puts the gun away in a drawer underneath his underwear and then lies down on the sofa to get some sleep.
Laurie bides her time until both Barney and Mona nod off. Quietly, Laurie slips out of bed and eases over to the drawer. She carefully removes the gun. Barney and Mona jolt awake as Laurie whirls around, the gun cocked to shoot...
