EDGE OF NIGHT, 12 MAR 1969
Eric Barrington visits Mona and Barney West, who owed money to Frank Loomis, a loan shark sent up the river to serve time.
Barrington offers to release the couple from their $9,000 debt, if they agree to watch a special kidnap victim from Monticello Laurie Ann Karr, daughter of attorney Mike Karr. While Mike is up in Capitol City attending a crime commission meeting, Mike's wife and step-mother of Laurie Ann, Nancy, agreed Laurie could attend an artist colony Laurie so wanted to a town called Somerset. Only mob henchmen followed Laurie's bus en route to Somerset and took Laurie hostage.
At a cabin in a dense forest where Laurie is held hostage, Laurie awakes and almost tricks captive JoJo into untying her hands, which she claims hurt very badly. Then attempts to get away, but she is caught, out muscled and reprimanded.
Facing physical harm and possibly death if they refuse to become Laurie's permanent captors, the Wests agree to Barrington's demand to watch Laurie Karr.
